Quay West is a residential development adjacent to the river Orwell in Ipswich for. It sits adjacent to the listed Grade 1 Maltings building and inhabits a commanding site that is highly visible from the northern quay and the marina. It is part of an ambition to revitalise the run down Ipswich docklands area and create a mixed-use development with residential properties linking from the city centre to the waterside.
The building consists of 1 and 2 bed apartments on 7 floors, with secure parking and landscaping to the rear. The apartments have expansive views of the river, with penthouses achieving sweeping views of the marina and the city centre beyond.
Architecturally, the building responds to the quay; it defines the street edge whilst being sensitive to the adjoining listed buildings. The design through its scale, materials and form, places the design in context with its surroundings and creates a new landmark. The tall repeating bays elegantly face the river and create a vertical emphasis and distinctive architecture. The side elevation responds to the Felaws Maltings building, using an angled terracotta rain screen wall and balconies to articulate the façade.
The scheme received a positive accolade from CABE.
