Land previously developed as a station terminus has ensured the site is central to the activity of this community at the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs. The local school brings footfall past the site, and its proximity to the Thames foot tunnel to Greenwich means a new public connection through the site attracts many visitors, exploring the area and seeking the historic Canaletto view across the river to Greenwich.
We worked closely with LBTH and Conservation Officers to develop this complex site. Key influences on the design were the two Conservation Areas (Island Gardens and Chapel House ), the Greenwich Royal Naval Hospital World Heritage Site on the opposite bank of the Thames, and the DLR tunnel running beneath.
The development is a U-shaped building, with apartments looking out to the historic context beyond. The generous pedestrian route through the site gives access to a central courtyard where residential entrances and overlooking apartments help maintain a safe and active environment.
