Client: Barratt Homes London;
Uses: 235 apartments, 675 sq.m of commercial space and 580 sq.m of office space;
This project at the edge of the City of London was the construction phase of a planning design by BFLS. Located on a prominent junction, the justification for a tall building is clear. Extending to 27 storeys the tower has retail spaces at ground level and an adjacent 7 storey office building over arranged around a new piazza and high quality public route across the site which forms a link to surrounding new developments. RMA were appointed from RIBA Stage D.
The challenge has required ensuring the architectural quality of the external envelope is of the highest standard to meet the aspirations of this City location, as well as contributing positively to the skyline, visible from great distance.
This high specification building with aluminium, glass and terracotta cladding was erected using a unitised cladding system which was craned directly into position. Mast climbers were used in addition for access. The client departed from their usual project finishes and the interiors were interior designed in keeping with the City location. A double basement provides valuable car parking and servicing space below the piazza.
